MLL 190 The World of Language I (AH or C) 3 credits

Language as a distinctive characteristic of the human species. Examines the structure of both written and spoken forms of language across cultures, comparing them with animal communication and human gestural systems. Language's neurological basis, theories of origin and first and second language learning are explored. Note: MLL 190 is required for the MLL major. MLL 191 The World of Language II (AH or C) 3 credits

Language as both a reflection and a determiner of social relationships. Examines the varying idioms of the scientist, the politician, the media, the poet, the child, and the magician and investigates how language changes and how it marks social groups. Communication strategies and social taboos reflected in language are discussed for a variety of cultures. Note: Although this course continues work begun in the World of Language I, it is designed so that students can easily enter MLL 191 without having taken MLL 190. Examines modern Japanese culture, including family structure, daily life, regional variations, inter-personal and inter-cultural communication, education from nursery school to college, the traditional arts still practiced in modern Japan and the development of popular youth culture. Students will deepen their understanding through cross-cultural role playing, hands-on experience with the arts and fieldtrips. The course is taught in English. Prerequisite: Junior standing. The study of communication within the context of the cultural setting. The three main goals are 1) to provide the students with materials, both cognitive and experiential, with which they can develop an awareness of their own cultural identity; 2) to increase their knowledge of the special communication problems to be expected in a cross-cultural situation; and 3) to offer students the opportunity to apply new insights to cross-cultural encounters. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor is required.
