Designed to give the student a working knowledge of weight training and aerobic conditioning programs. Students are exposed to selectorized machines, free weight and cardiovascular training. Section 6060 will meet in the RAC weight room, 7060 will meet in the Varsity Weight Training Facility located on the RAC Arena Track. "T'ai Chi Chih"® practice is a series of 20 easy-to-learn movements that strongly circulate and balance the chi, the life flow within us. It is a moving meditation that reduces stress, generates vital health, and peace of mind, and enhances creativity and relaxation. PHED 127C Aquatic Activities Whitewater Rafting 1.5 credits

During this weekend-long course, students will learn how to whitewater raft on Class III rapids. Students will arrive at the campgrounds on Friday evening. Saturday, students will be instructed on basic rafting techniques and water safety before heading out to raft in Class III rapids with their professional guide. On Sunday, students will take a more leisurely ride down Class I and II rapids before returning to campus. All participants are expected to provide their own tents and other camping equipment. All rafting equipment will be provided. Fee: $200 for lodging, rafting, equipment rental, transportation and food. Students interested in this class should contact hmoore2@umbc.edu.

The goal of this course is to empower women and prevent violence. It provides women with practical self-defense skills including verbal negotiation, releases from various grabs, rape prevention, and defense against strikes and knife attacks.

A combination of programs that are involved with both activities ranging from low impact to advanced programs for each particular activity. This class is designed to meet the needs of both walkers and joggers. Workouts vary in both distance, pace and location. Some of the classes will meet in nearby scenic Patapsco State Park. PHED 149 Fundamentals of Sailing 1.5 credits

This course teaches the novice sailor to rig, get underway and sail a daysailer. Topics include nautical terminology, rigging, points of sail, sail trim, sailing maneuvers of tacking and jibbing, basic chart reading, bouyage system in day-sailing, rules of sailing, and safety considerations. Students should come to the first class dressed appropriately (i.e. rubber-soled shoes, hat, sunglasses, and rain jacket). Life-jackets are provided. Boats used for instruction are 23 foot, fixed keel racing/daysailer sloops called Sonars. Class meets at Getaway Sailing in the Fells Point area of the Patapsco River. If available, the department will provide transportation to a local bowling alley (Brunswick-Normandy Bowling Center-Route 40W). There is a slight fee for equipment rental and game charge. Ashtanga Vinyasa "Power" Yoga is accompanied by a powerful breathing technique called Ujjayi which calms and centers the mind while building heat in the body, strengthening the respiratory and skeletal muscles, and increasing Vo2 Max. The primary series is considered therapeutic and lays the foundation for more advanced postures and series and protects against injuries.
