The equilibrium of stationary bodies under the influence of various kinds of forces. Forces, moments, couples, equilibrium, trusses, frames and machines, centroids, moments of inertia, beams, friction and hydrostatics. Vector and scalar methods are used to solve problems. Prerequisite: MATH 151. Corequisite: PHYS 121.

ENES 220 Mechanics of Materials 3 credits

Distortion of engineering materials in relation to changes in stress or temperature. Geometry of internal strain and external displacement. Applications to beams, columns, shafts, tanks, and other structural machine and vehicle members. Prerequisites: ENES 110, MATH 151 and PHYS 121. Corequisite: MATH 251. Systems of heavy particles and rigid bodies at rest and in motion. Force-acceleration, work-energy and impulse-momentum relationships. Motion of one body relative to another in a plane and in space. Prerequisites: PHYS 121, ENES 110 and MATH 152.
