PHED 116 Trail Hiking 1.5 credits

Improve your conditioning by hiking some of the best local backcountry hiking trails. Along the way, mini-lectures will focus on foot ware and care, trail safety, map reading, clothing selection and helpful accessories. Student must attend the first class and complete seven of the ten hikes offered. First class will meet on RAC Indoor Track. For more information contact mackay@umbc.edu.

T'ai Chi Chih® practice is a series of 20 easy-to-learn movements that strongly circulate and balance the chi, the life force that flows within us. It is a moving meditation that reduces stress, generates vital health and peace of mind, and enhances creativity and relaxation. PHED 127C Aquatic Activities Whitewater Rafting 1.5 credits

Two three-day courses designed to allow students the option of learning to whitewater raft on a beginner level river or challenging themselves on a more advanced set of rapids. On Day 1, students will meet at UMBC, drive as a group to the campgrounds, and then set-up camp. On Day 2, students will raft all day and then enjoy a campside dinner. On day 3, students will enjoy another full day of rafting and then pack up to head back to campus. No experience necessary for either trip. All participants are expected to provide their own tents and other camping equipment. All rafting equipment will be provided. 7010 –June 1-3, on the Tygart and Cheat Rivers in West Virginia (Class III-IV). Lab Fee $250- for lodging, rafting, equipment rental, transportation and food. 7020- July 21-23, on the Lower Youghiogheny River in Ohiopyle, PA (Class III rapids) Lab Fee: $200.00 - for lodging, rafting, equipment rental, transportation and food. PHED 129 Women's Self Defense 1.5 credits

The goal of this course is to empower women and prevent gender-based violence. This course provides women with practical self defense skills including verbal negotiation, releases from various grabs, rape prevention, and defense against strikes and knife attacks. The majority of techniques are based on Budo Taijutsu, which is a very practical martial art for people of all sizes, strengths, and ages. For more information contact 2cathyjohnson@comcast.net.

If available, the department will provide transportation to the Brunswick Zone Bowling Center on Rt. 40. PHED 149 Fundamentals of Sailing 1.5 credits

This course teaches the novice sailor to rig, get underway and sail a day sailer. Topics include nautical terminology, rigging, points of sail, sail trim, sailing maneuvers of tacking and jibing, basic chart reading, buoyage system in day-sailing, rules of sailing, and safety considerations. Students should come to the first class dressed appropriately (i.e. rubber-soled shoes, hat and sunglasses). Life-jackets and rain suits are provided. Boats used for instruction are 23 foot, fixed keel racing/day sailer sloops called Sonars. Class meets at Getaway Sailing in the Fells Point area of the Patapsco River. Ashtanga Vinyasa "power" Yoga is accompanied by a powerful breathing technique called Ujjayi that calms and centers the mind while building heat in the body, strengthens the respiratory and skeletal muscles and increases VO 2 Max.
