PHED 106 Golf and Volleyball 1.5 credits

Fundamentals of the golf swing and an introduction to putting, chipping, and sand play. Introduction to golf etiquette and rules enable a beginner to play a round of golf. Students will have a chance to participate in an optional 9-hole golf outing. Golf will be the only sport covered in this course. Lab Fee: $25.00. For more information contact oneillb@umbc.edu.

PHED 116 Trail Hiking 1.5 credits

Section 6040 - Improve your conditioning by hiking some of the best local backcountry hiking trails. Along the way, mini-lectures will focus on foot ware and care, trail safety, map reading, clothing selection and helpful accessories. Students must attend the first class and complete seven of the ten hikes offered. All hikes take place during scheduled meeting times. First class will meet on RAC Indoor Track. For more information regarding section 6040 contact mackay@umbc.edu. Section 6041 - This course is designed to use a variety of outdoor adventure activities at Genesee Valley Outdoor Center. This weekend course, from Friday evening June 8th to Sunday afternoon June 10th will feature activities like rock climbing, ropes courses, and team building events. An additional fee for the course is required for meals and camping. For more information on section 6041 contact hammond@umbc.edu.

This course is designed to give the student a working knowledge of weight training and aerobic conditioning programs. T'ai Chi Chih® practice is a series of 20 easy-to-learn movements that strongly circulate and balance the chi, the life force within us. It is a moving meditation that reduces stress, generates vital health and peace of mind, and enhances creativity and relaxation. PHED 129 Women's Self Defense 1.5 credits

The goal of this course is to empower women and to prevent violence against women. This course provides women with practical self-defense skills emphasizing releases from various grabs including some defenses against punches and knife attacks. The majority of techniques are based in Aikido, which is a very practical martial art for people of all sizes, strengths and ages.

PHED 149 Fundamentals of Sailing 1.5 credits

This course will teach the novice sailor to rig, get under way and sail a daysailer. Topics include nautical terminology, rigging, points of sail, sail trim, sailing maneuvers of tacking and jibing, basic chart reading, buoyage system in day-sailing, rules of sailing, and safety considerations. Students should come to the first class dressed appropriately (i.e. rubber-soled shoes, hat and sunglasses). Life-jackets and rain suits are provided. Boats used for instruction are 23 foot, fixed keel racing/day sailer sloops called Sonars. Class meets at Getaway Sailing in the Fells Point area of the Patapsco River. Note: A Lab Fee of $110.00 is required for this course. For more information contact info@getawaysailing.com.

Ashtanga Vinyasa "power" Yoga is accompanied by a powerful breathing technique called Ujjayi that calms and centers the mind while building heat in the body, strengthens the respiratory and skeletal muscles and increases VO 2 Max. The primary series is considered therapeutic and lays the foundation for more advanced postures and series and protects against injuries. Students should bring a sticky mat to the first class.
