ELC 041 ESL: Writing and Grammar for Academic 3 credits
Purposes

This course is designed for high-intermediate English students to develop academic writing skills. Students in this class will learn to write successful papers through outlining ideas, writing first drafts, peer editing and revising. Students progress from writing well-formed paragraphs to longer essays with clear topic sentences, appropriate support materials and logical conclusions. Students also will learn about the different styles of academic writing, including the use of references and citations. Prerequisite: Permission of the department.

ELC 042 ESL: Reading and Vocabulary Development 3 credits
for Academic Purposes

This course is designed for high-intermediate English students to improve reading comprehension and general language skills. Students will develop advanced comprehension skills, understand figurative language and recognize a writer's intent. Texts include fiction and non-fiction materials, emphasizing reading for both information and pleasure. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions and prepare presentations for the class. Prerequisite: Permission of the department.

ELC 043 ESL: Speaking and Listening for Academic 3 credits
Purposes

Assuming that the students entering this course have familiarity with the basic concepts of spoken English, this course develops discussion skills, note-taking, listening for a specific purpose, and the protocol and delivery of prepared speeches. Students are assisted with discrete pronunciation issues, intonation, register and appropriate vocabulary. Students are also introduced to conversation patterns, non-verbal language and idioms that are common in the United States.

ELC 051 ESL: Advanced Writing and Grammar for 3 credits
Academic Purposes

This course gives students a preliminary opportunity to produce the advanced writing necessary for academic written communications. Grammar within the context of the writing process is emphasized, and grammatical/ mechanical problems common to advanced learners are addressed. Writers move from personal, expressive writing to informative and persuasive writing. Students develop the writing skills necessary for analysis, presentation of research topics and argumentation.

ELC 052 ESL: Advanced Reading and Vocabulary 3 credits
Development for Academic Purposes

Students further develop critical reading skills that isolate major and minor points, types of support, fact and opinion, cohesive devices and vocabulary analysis. Source material includes articles, long nonfiction writing, data presentations and additional contemporary materials. Vocabulary is also developed by synonym study, context and word components of stem plus affixes, and critical thinking exercises. Discussion is emphasized.

ELC 053 ESL: Advanced Speaking and Listening for 3 credits
Academic Purposes

The emphasis of this course is on note-taking, listening, discussion, and various modes of presentation and classroom interaction. Students listen to and discuss oral presentations of contemporary and academic topics and issues. They also attend academic lectures and campus activities. Idioms and vocabulary register are emphasized for understanding and appropriateness. Presentations are both prepared and impromptu.
