PHED 106  Golf and Volleyball                                   1.5 credits
Fundamentals of the golf swing and an introduction to putting, chipping, and sand play. Introduction to golf etiquette and rules enable a beginner to play a round of golf. PHED 111  Aerobic Conditioning                                  1.5 credits

PHED 112  Beginning Swimming                                    1.5 credits

PHED 116  Trail Hiking                                          1.5 credits
Improve your conditioning by hiking some of the best local backcountry hiking trails. Along the way, mini-lectures will focus on footwear and care, trail safety, map reading, clothing selection and helpful accessories. Students must attend the first class and complete seven of the ten hikes offered. *Section 7040* - This course is designed to use a variety of outdoor adventure activities at Genesee Valley Outdoor Center. This weekend course, from Friday evening July 11th to Sunday afternoon July 13th will feature activities like rock climbing, ropes courses, and team building events. An additional lab fee for the course is required for meals and camping. Lab Fee (Section 7040 only): $155.00. PHED 121  Physical Fitness                                      1.5 credits
This course is designed to give the student a working knowledge of weight training and aerobic conditioning programs. Students will be exposed to nautilus, free weight and universal machine training, as well as aerobics. PHED 122  Self Defense T'ai Chi Chih                            1.5 credits
T'ai Chi Chih® practice is a series of 20 easy-to-learn movements that strongly circulate and balance the chi, the life force within us. It is a moving meditation that reduces stress, generates vital health and peace of mind, and enhances creativity and relaxation. PHED 129  Women's Self Defense                                  1.5 credits
The goal of this course is to empower women and to prevent violence against women. This course provides women with practical self-defense skills emphasizing releases from various grabs and including some defenses against punches and knife attacks. The majority of techniques are based in Aikido, which is a very practical martial art for people of all sizes, strengths and ages. Lab Fee: $10.00. For more information contact cj@umbc.edu.

An introductory activity class that includes basic skills, terminology, rules and courtesies as it relates to the game of tennis. An activity class designed to introduce and/or review the skills, techniques and other aspects of 10 pin and duck pin bowling. PHED 149  Fundamentals of Sailing                               1.5 credits
For the novice sailor who wishes to learn or hone sailing skills. The boats used are high-performance 23-foot, sloop-rigged Sonars. Instruction takes place in the Harbor and Chesapeake Bay from the Canton section of Baltimore. Note: A Lab Fee of $150.00 is required for this course. PHED 155  Yoga                                                  1.5 credits
Ashtanga Vinyasa “power” Yoga is accompanied by a powerful breathing technique called Ujjayi that calms and centers the mind while building heat in the body, strengthens the respiratory and skeletal muscles and increase VO 2 Max.  The primary series is considered therapeutic and lays the foundation for more advanced postures and series, and protects against injuries.  For more information contact sknicht@umbc.edu.

PHED 190  CPR, AED, First Aid Certification                     1.5 credits
This course prepares students to cope when emergency care is needed. Studies in accident prevention, examination procedures and first aid care for victims of accidents or sudden illness before medical assistance is available will be covered. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive American Red Cross certification in CPR (adult, child & infant), Automated External Defibrillation, and Basic First Aid.
