| This course examines the impact of social policies upon women, and through them, their children. It explores in-depth the political and social assumptions the United States and other cultures make about women's lives, their roles and responsibilities. The course investigates the belief systems which support various policies and allow, promote, condone or condemn their implementation. Note: Also listed as WMST 377. Approach to Assessment, Intervention and
Treatment for Chemically Dependent
Individuals and their Families
| This course is designed to teach the student the concepts of addiction as it relates to alcohol and other drugs. It presents addiction theories, models and definitions of abuse and dependency to guide discussions of the comprehensive process of screening, diagnosis, interventions and referral. It also presents information on the differential use of addictive substances and special problems in various groups: children, families, ethnic groups, gays and lesbians, dually diagnosed clients, the elderly, and women. Current issues such as the decriminalization of some currently prescribed substances and trends in service provision for chemically dependent patients, especially third-party coverage and managed care, are also discussed. Note: Permission of the Social Work Department is required. This course is open to students who have completed SOWK 388.
