Designed to develop cardiovascular fitness through workouts using a variety of aerobic equipment on the Cardio Balcony (treadmills, steppers, cycles, etc.), as well as the indoor track and indoor pool. PHED 112  Beginning Swimming                                    1.5 credits
Designed to develop the necessary swimming skills so the student will feel safe and secure in, on or around the water. All basic skills are covered. This class is open to both beginner and intermediate swimmers. For more information contact ccrado1@umbc.edu.

Designed to give the student a working knowledge of weight training and aerobic conditioning programs. PHED 122  Self Defense Tai Chi-Chih                             1.5 credits
"T'ai Chi Chih" practice is a series of 20 easy-to-learn movements that strongly circulate and balance the chi, the life flow within us. It is a moving meditation that reduces stress, generates vital health, and peace of mind, and enhances creativity and relaxation. Note: "T'ai Chi Chih" practice is not a martial art or a self-defense class. For more information contact sirkis@umbc.edu.

PHED 129  Women's Self Defense                                  1.5 credits
The goal of this course is to empower women and prevent violence. It provides women with practical self-defense skills emphasizing releases from various grabs, including some defenses against punches and knife attacks. Special attention and sensitivity is given to women with special needs as a result of past trauma. The majority of techniques are based in Aikido, which is a very practical martial art for people of all sizes, strengths and ages.

A combination of programs that are involved with both activities ranging from low impact to advanced programs for each particular activity. PHED 141  Skiing                                                1.5 credits
This class provides professional instruction for skiers from beginner to expert. Students are charged a fee for lifts, lessons, rental (if necessary) and transportation to Ski Liberty. Note: The first class for section 9101 meets on Tuesday, January 4th, section 9102 meets on Thursday, January 6th in the Retriever Activities Center lobby. Please be prepared to ski on that evening. PHED 143  Bowling -- Ten Pins                                   1.5 credits
An activity class designed to introduce and/or review the skills, techniques and other aspects of ten pin bowling. If available, the department will provide transportation to a local bowling alley (Brunswick-Normandy Bowling Center-Route 40W). There is a slight fee for equipment rental and game charge. This course emphasizes the basic skills of indoor soccer, including trapping, passing, shooting, one-on-one matchups, goaltending and use of the sideboards. This course also emphasizes rules, conditioning and team play. For more information contact aadams2@umbc.edu.

PHED 155  Yoga                                                  1.5 credits
Ashtanga Vinyasa "Power" Yoga is accompanied by a powerful breathing technique called Ujjayi which calms and centers the mind while building heat in the body, strengthening the respiratory and skeletal muscles, and increasing Vo2 Max. The primary series is considered therapeutic and lays the foundation for more advanced postures and series and protects against injuries. Students need to bring or purchase a sticky mat for this course. For more information contact sknicht@umbc.edu.

Instruction in the basic techniques and strategies of billiards. Students are exposed to a variety of games including: straight billiards, nine ball and tournament play. This course covers the basics of ice skating techniques. The course includes group and individual instruction and is held at the Piney Orchard Ice Rink in Odenton, MD. There is a nominal fee for ice time. Transportation to the rink and skate rental is available.
