MUSC 100 Introduction to Music 3 credits

HYBRID COURSE - For students with little or no formal training in music. This non-technical course explores the elements of music (e.g., rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, form, etc.) as found mainly in Western Classical music. Other genres and styles of interest to students will be explored as well. Students will meet face-to-face in 6 sessions over the term as well as completing other online class work including writing about pieces they have listened to and engaging in structured discussions. Students work in a team-based learning approach. Students will agree on an additional one-hour session for the final. For more information contact airubin@umbc.edu.

MUSC 101 Fundamentals of Music Theory 3 credits

HYBRID COURSE – A study of the fundamentals of music theory, including notation, scale construction, intervals, chords, meter, etc., with emphasis on learning and developing music reading skills. This hybrid course will meet approximately 1/3 in person and 2/3 online. Class will not meet in person on every scheduled day. For more information contact belzer@umbc.edu.
