Psychology and Belief in the Paranormal
|
This course examines various paranormal phenomena, and some of the more salient social psychological/cognitive factors that often play a role with the belief in same. Topics evaluated include more traditional parapsychological phenomena (e.g., ESP, "near death experiences") as well as such "events" as UFOs and "alien abductions." Students will learn to apply social psychological concepts (e.g. confirmation bias) to parapsychology, and will employ critical thinking skills in the scientific evaluation of the paranormal. The course will also feature several guest speakers, who will offer their rationale for the actual existence of such phenomena as ghosts, UFOS, and extraterrestrials.
