Studies
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This seminar
introduces students to the theory and
practice of research in gender and women's
studies. The course examines the
distinguishing qualities of feminist
methodologies in the social sciences,
humanities, and natural sciences. By
reading and discussing examples of
excellent and innovative gender and
women's studies research, students will
acquaint themselves with both the
practical details and the ethical issues
involved. The course gives particular
attention to the interdisciplinary focus
of feminist research as well as questions
of what distinguishes women's studies from
other disciplines; how feminist research
and community/political activism are
related; how feminist research is changing
the traditional disciplines and the
methods used in research; and future
directions of feminist methods.

Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD
GEP:Meets WI and SS. GFR:Meets SS. This
course will explore connections between
science and gender by turning our
attention to two interrelated themes. One
focus will be on questions of how gender
shapes the practice of science--whether or
not women and men 'do' science
differently. The other focus will be on
how sex, gender, and sexuality are
constructed by the natural and social
sciences- how have the sciences understood
and analyzed sex, gender, and sexuality?
Throughout the course, science will be
explored as activity and knowledge that is
grounded in social and historical
contexts. Prerequisite: GWST 100, a 100
level social or natural science course, or
permission of the instructor.

GWST 680 Theories of Feminism 3 credits
Grade Method: REG/P-F This course examines
contemporary feminist theories of women's
oppression and liberation. The class will
read major works of twentieth century
feminine thinkers, and analyze the
theoretical perspectives they represent,
and discuss the commonalities and
differences between them. The issues we
will examine from a feminine perspective
will include gender, experience, identity,
difference, equality, sexuality,
mothering, wage work, racism, imperialism,
language and representation. Throughout
the course, we will consider the
historical, social, intellectual, and
political contexts within which these
theories developed, including the
relationship of feminist theory and the
contemporary women's movements. The course
will also examine key differences among
women based upon race, class, sexual
orientation, culture, religion and
nationality, as well as strategies for
effectively negotiating those differences.
Also listed as LLC750D and GWST480.
Prerequisite: GWST100, GWST/AMST310 or
permission of the instructor. Course meets
in ACIV 422.
