ACTiVATE
UMBC's ACTiVATE program introduces highly-driven, mid-career
women to the basics of entrepreneurship and technology commercialization.
Trainees will work with technology innovations from universities in the
region and turn them into technology-based, start-up companies. The program
has received a $600,000 NSF grant and support from TEDCO and corporate
sponsors. The program's goals over the next three years include training
approximately 90 women to become technology entrepreneurs, evaluating
45 technologies developed by Maryland universities and federal labs and
launching six to nine new companies.

Brown Center for Entrepreneurship
The Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship works closely with
the Baltimore business community with one vision in mind - to create one
of the leading university centers for entrepreneurism in the country for
universities its size. The Center provides workshops, credit and non-credit
classes and other resources for entrepreneurs and start-up companies.

bwtech@UMBC is a 41-acre research and technology community being
developed by the international commercial real estate firm Grosvenor
in collaboration with UMBC. It has a total development capacity of up
to 330,000 square feet of office and laboratory space. The park will
ultimately comprise five new state-of-the-art buildings occupied by
research and technology firms that will also have access to University
expertise, students, technology, programs and facilities.

techcenter@UMBC offers a dynamic, fully-equipped facility for
start-up and emerging companies. Its specialized environment and services
provide businesses with a competitive edge. techcenter@UMBC also promotes
strategic alliances among tenants and connections between tenants, UMBC
faculty and external companies in the region. Some companies will eventually
take residence within bwtech@UMBC, the University’s research and
technology park.
