ABRCMS - Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students

UMBC and the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences were well represented at the 2008 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, which is the largest multidisciplinary student conference in the United States. The following 45 UMBC undergraduates and three graduate students submitted abstracts and were selected to present their research at the three-day, juried event, which featured Dr. Freeman Hrabowski as a keynote speaker:

Anissa Alexander, Yohance Allette, Stephanie Battle, Maria Beckford, Richard Bllissett, Sheila Boateng, Ashleigh Bouchelion, Erwin Cabrera, Ramon Cabrera, Nancy Chiles, Andrew Ciupek, Ryan Connor, George Cutsail, Anupama Divakaruni, Bilguujin Dorjsuren, Phillip Fitzgerald, Monique Foster, Nisha George, Laura Jones, Nathaniel Kim, Benyam Kinde, Gowry Kulandaivel, Sindhu Lakkur, Brandon McClary, Gabrielle McRae, Carlos , Meheux, Jessica Michaels, Satish Mishra, Brandon Nemieboka, Erin O'Connor, Evelyn Ojo, Olubukola Oriola, Nana Owusu-Boaitey, Nicole Parker, Nicholas Pinkin, Melissa Santos, Alexandria Scott, Donielle Simons, Sara Stockman, Sameera Syed, Carla Valenzuela, Melvin Velasquez, William Watson, Immanuel Williams, and Hannah Wilson (undergraduates) and Kholiswa Laird, Marlon Lawrence, and Lanyn Perez (senior graduate students).

A number of Meyerhoff Scholarship and MARC U*STAR Program alumni visited the Meyerhoff Graduate Fellowship Program's exhibition booth, which attracted interest from many of the 3,000 conference attendees. Drs. Lasse Lindahl and Maricel Kann served as judges at the event and staff members Earnestine Baker,Taifa Hibbert and Mitsue Wiggs provided student support. Members of the recruitment booth team included Justine Johnson, Kathy Sutphin, Kholiswa Laird, Marlon Lawrence and Lanyn Perez.

At the gala closing ceremony on November 8th, the following UMBC students received 11 of the 120 awards that were given in ten categories to recognize the most outstanding presentations among the excellent 1200 undergraduate posters and 80 oral talks:

The yearly ABRCMS conference is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and managed by the American Society for Microbiology to facilitate the success of students pursuing advanced degrees in the biomedical sciences. Next year's ABRCMS event will be held from November 4 to 7, 2009 in Phoenix Arizona.
