A student centered research university, UMBC is a growing center for research and development and technology commercialization. Campus research grants and training contracts have topped $63 million, up from just $8-million in 1990. Patent applications by UMBC researchers have more than quadrupled in the past three years and more than 75 University-developed technologies are available for licensing. Adjacent to the campus, The UMBC Technology Center houses private research, development and training organizations seeking interaction with University faculty, students, and research facilities.

UMBC is a medium sized public research institution located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. This area has one of the greatest concentrations of commercial, cultural, and scientific activity in the nation. UMBC is part of the University of Maryland Graduate School, Baltimore. Thus graduate students here have easy access to courses, practical experiences, and research opportunities at other University System of Maryland campuses. Nearby national research centers, libraries, museums and biotechnology firms are also a resource for scholarly activity.

Applied Molecular Biology
An intensive 9-month Masters program providing laboratory-based training in Biotechnology designed for students with an interest in a career in the Biotechnology industry

Biochemistry
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers two Ph.D. programs with emphasis in Biochemistry. These programs offer the student an opportunity to do research in the application of fundamental chemical principles to areas of Biochemistry.

Biochem Faculty
Biological Sciences
The Ph.D. and M.S. programs in Biological Sciences are designed to offer a broad, multidisciplinary modern education in the life sciences coupled with the development of in-depth expertise and research training within a specialized area.
BioChemical Engineering
Students pursuing advanced studies in the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department explore fundamental concepts of biological and biochemical phenomena with faculty at the leading-edge of engineering research. Follow the links below for more specific information.

Opportunities at the Chemistry-Biology Inteface
Special fellowships are available for students wishing to study at the Chemistry/Biology Interface. These fellowships enable students to earn a Ph.D. either in Chemistry or in the Biological Sciences, with substantial training in the other discipline.

Marine-Estuarine-Environmental Sciences
The goal of the Marine-Estuarine-Environmental Sciences (MEES) program is to train students with career interests in some aspect of environmental science involving terrestrial, freshwater, marine, or estuarine systems and leads to both the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees.
MEES Faculty

Molecular and Cell Biology
The Ph.D. program in Molecular and Cell Biology (MOCB) combines the substantial faculty resources and research facilities of several departments within the schools of engineering and arts and sciences at UMBC and the Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB) of the Maryland Biotechnology Institute to offer a truly interdisciplinary and state-of-the-art educational experience for those desiring advanced training in molecular and cell biology.

Neurobiology and Cognitive Sciences
The NACS program offers a wide range of research and training opportunities for students pursuing doctoral-level research in a variety of areas within neorosciences, computational neurosciences, and cognitive science.
