Research Mentors provide invaluable
support to the MARC U*STAR Program at UMBC and their continued
support
is essential to student and program success. Brief, periodic
surveys will be sent to our mentors to check on student
progress and mentor
satisfaction. If you should have questions
or concerns at any time, please contact Dr. Lasse Lindahl
(410-455-2996 or lindahl@umbc.edu) or
Taifa Hibbert (410-455-2634 or hibbert@umbc.edu).
Research Mentors of MARC Trainees are eligible to receive up to $1,500 per year per program
participant to cover the cost of
eligible research supplies and activities. Please contact
Taifa Hibbert (410-455-2634 or hibbert@umbc.edu)
for information.
MARC Trainees who are engaged
in sustained research projects under the supervision of
their MARC mentors are encouraged
to attend regional and national scientific meetings where they
can hone their research presentation skills and network
with researchers
and other students who have similar research interests. Limited
financial support including
travel expenses for participation in approved scientific
meetings
is available through the MARC Program. Please contact Taifa
Hibbert (410-455-2634 or hibbert@umbc.edu)
for information.
MARC Trainees and Pre-MARC Students
are required to submit
biweekly research training records
(RTRs) that
log in the hours spent on their research projects with descriptions
of their research activities. These RTRs must be signed
by the student and mentor
or approved
representatives
of
the mentor.
The completed
and signed RTRs are due within one week of the last day
of the reporting period to Room 477 in the UMBC
Biological Sciences Building. This is a program requirement.
Posters, platform talks, abstracts
and articles about the scientific research of a MARC Trainee
or Pre-MARC Student should
include a citation to ensure that UMBC, the MARC
Program and NIGMS/NIH are given appropriate credit for research
support. A suggested citation to use is as follows:
xxxxx “This
investigation was supported, in part, by the University
of Maryland,
Baltimore County (UMBC) through the National Institutes
of Health (NIH)
National Research Service (NRSA) Award GM 08663 to
the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Undergraduate
Student Training
in Academic Research (U*STAR) Program at UMBC.
It is imperative that copies of any preprints or reprints of
publications listing MARC Trainees or Pre-MARC Students as
coauthors
are sent to Taifa Hibbert, the MARC Administrative Coordinator, Room 106H Academic Services.
These copies of publications will be included with Dr. Lindahl's
annual progress reports on the MARC U*STAR Program at UMBC
to NIGMS/NIH.
