UMBC Technology Center 99 Percent Leased
August 4, 1997-In addition to its new signs hailing commuters along I-95 between Baltimore and Washington, the UMBC Technology Center has recently attracted five new tenants, nearly filling the 30-acre research and training facility. Currently, 21 companies with more than 200 employees occupy the former Lockheed Martin research complex. The newest arrivals include the following firms:
- CellGene Laboratory-an incubator company specializing in commercializing diagnostic procedures for blood that may lead to a possible alternatives to amniocentesis and a screening test for prostate cancer.
- Daum Corporation-the research and development arm of a German company which has developed a robotic hand and data glove with applications ranging from medicine to electronic games.
- Epitaxial Technologies-an incubator company that produces semiconductor wafers for wireless communications, lasers, and photodetectors for optical fiber telecommunications and collision avoidance.
- MetaMorphix-an emerging technology firm developing new therapeutic approaches for repair, regeneration and replacement of human organs and tissues.
- T.Rowe Price-the human resources division of this Baltimore-based investment management and advisory firm will operate a training facility.
The UMBC Technology Center opened this past spring through cooperative efforts among Maryland's Department of Business & Economic Development, Baltimore County's Department of Economic Development, the Maryland Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO) and the Maryland General Assembly. The State reached an agreement with Lockheed Martin to purchase the facility for $9.5 million, with $5 million appropriated by the General Assembly.
"The UMBC Technology Center and Research Park, now being developed, provide the region and State with an outstanding system of facilities to support high technology business development."
-President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III
