October 11, 1996 - For the fourth consecutive year, a member of the UMBC community
has been honored as Maryland Professor of the Year by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The award, considered one of the most prestigious to honor
professors, recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching.
1996: Thomas Field is associate professor and former chair of the modern languages and linguistics department. "Dr. Field is an outstanding teacher and scholar whose commitment to his students and UMBC is unparalleled," says Provost Jo Ann
E. Argersinger. "His passion for teaching and skill in the classroom are well known."
1995: Kristan Presnell '83, an assistant professor of computer science at Anne Arundel Community College, was cited for her extensive computing skills and innovative teaching. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at UMBC in operations analysis.
1994: Stephen Vicchio '73, a former adjunct professor of philosophy, is a well-known and highly regarded teacher, writer, and philosopher. He is professor of philosophy at the College of Notre Dame in Maryland.
1993: Jay Freyman, associate professor of ancient studies and director of the Honors College, is a longtime champion of the classics. He has been instrumental in recruiting students to the ancient studies department and in developing programs for t
he Honors College.
The goal of the U.S. Professors of the Year program is to increase awareness of the significance of undergraduate education, by honoring individuals who heighten respect and admiration for teaching. It recognizes excellence in the following areas: impact
on and involvement with undergraduate students; scholarly approach to teaching; service to undergraduate students, the institution, community, and profession; and support from colleagues and current and former students. The program is administered by the
Council
for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
