International Student Friendship Program
The UMBC Alumni Association is recruiting volunteers for the 2001-02 academic year to serve as "friends"
in our International Student Friendship Program. Volunteers are matched with newly arrived international
students who need assistance adjusting to our culture. Depending on the needs of the student, alumni are
asked to connect with their students at least once a month by sending an email or going to an educational
event; it's up to you. For information, contact Juliana Schamp at jhschamp@qis.net
or call (410) 945-0210.
Share Your Expertise--Join the ACE Network
Remember when your career path was less than clear or when you were constantly having to answer the "What are you

Admissions Volunteers
Alumni admissions volunteers are needed to assist admissions representatives at college fairs in the fall. Tell
prospective students why you'd choose UMBC all over again! There will be a brief training session in early September
where we discuss what to expect at the fairs and all the new things going on at UMBC over dinner. If you are interested
in becoming an admissions volunteer, call (410) 455-ALUM or email alum@umbc.edu.
From Backpack to Briefcase
With "From Backpack to Briefcase," you can return to campus to share career advice with students. Typically, alumni
and students from a specific discipline attend an informal luncheon on campus and discuss career options. Students
and faculty greatly appreciate these insights into the professional world--and it's a great way for you to invest
in the future of UMBC and its students. For information on luncheon dates, call (410) 455-ALUM or email
alum@umbc.edu.
Pre-med Mentoring Program
If you work in the medical community, your experience is valuable to students considering careers in the medical field.
UMBC is currently matching students with alumni doctors for the fall and we are still looking for more mentors. If you
would like to become a mentor or have questions about the program, call (410) 455-ALUM or email
alum@umbc.edu.
Alumni Association Steering Committees
The UMBC Alumni Association has numerous volunteer opportunities and offers membership with several specialized chapters
within the association. Three of the Alumni Association's constituency groups, C-YA (Chapter of Young Alumni), On-campus
Alumni and English Alumni Society, are looking for alumni to volunteer on steering committees. For information about
these or other committees of the Alumni Association, call (410) 455-ALUM, email alum@umbc.edu
