Affinity Programs
UMBC is continually looking for new ways for alumni to receive
added benefits for being a UMBC graduate. Through affinity programs--partnerships
with companies such as GEICO, Allfirst and MBNA--UMBC is able to provide special
discounts and services available exclusively to UMBC alumni.
"The most important determinant in starting a program is the benefit
it has for our alumni," says Sheldon Caplis, vice president of institutional advancement.
"Any time a new program is proposed, we carefully interview companies and screen each
proposed program to make sure it is a good fit for both alumni and the university."
Currently about one in four alumni are taking advantage of at least one
affinity program. For example, more than 6,000 alumni are using the partnership with GEICO,
which provides an additional 8 percent off of their car insurance.
You will soon receive information on two of our newest affinity programs.
MBNA will be calling about the Platinum Plus MasterCard, which displays UMBC's name and
offers valuable privileges, services and convenience to members. Each time you use the
card it will benefit UMBC alumni and student programs. Following this you will receive
information relating to a new partnership between Allfirst and the UMBC Alumni Association
offering special banking services just for UMBC alumni. This program is designed to maximize
your time and money and will change the way you look at financial services.
Alumni participation in these affinity programs provides revenue for
various alumni and student programs. Money generated from the affinity programs is also
used to fund Alumni Association scholarships and awards that are presented to more than
40 students each year at the Alumni Awards Reception.
Watch for more partnerships and programs to benefit alumni and UMBC.
