Good Health is Her Business

Diane
Jones "UMBC taught me to be an independent thinker and learner," says Diane Jones '88, who received a master's degree in applied molecular biology. And it has been a lesson learned well.

Today, Jones is not only a biology instructor at Catonsville Community College and co-owner of Athena Environmental Inc., a biotechnology company, but also the owner of the Holistic Wellness Center and Good & Good For You Natural Market in Catonsville.

As the founding director of an environmental monitoring and toxicology laboratory, the Upper Chesapeake Bay Water Quality Assessment Center, she was briefly exposed to dangerous chemicals, and became interested in holistic medicine.

"It was impossible to lift my head off the pillow," says Jones, who was pregnant with her second child. "I was on complete bed rest and lost part of my memory and vision." She delivered a healthy son, but her

own recovery was much slower. And when it appeared that conventional medicine had done all it could, she took matters into her own hands, turning to holistic medicine. "I changed my diet, my lifestyle. I received acupuncture treatment," she says.

"I had all this information and wanted to pass it on and help others," Jones adds. She started the Holistic Wellness Center in 1991 and Good & Good For You in 1992.

"My life has gone on all these different paths. Some good, some bad," says Jones, who is also a member of the board of directors of UMBC's Research Park. "But at every turn you can find wonderful possibilities."
