Taking Steps of Her Own

Lori Pryor When Lori Pryor '89 began her dance studio, Dance Foundations, she was signing up students at a card table outside the building where the studio would be. "I had 30 parents and children sign up for the first month of classes with no dance space visible. But they liked me and were willing to trust me to take care of all the other particulars," she says. That she did.

In the last two years, Pryor has seen Dance Foundations, located in Columbia, MD, grow from those 30 original students to 250. And the studio has moved into a bigger building, with two studios, instead of one.

"I wanted to teach young children and train them carefully from the start," Pryor says. "I wanted to make sure that when they got older they would have the foundations they needed whether they aspired to a professional career, or just for the enjoyment of the art form."

As a student at UMBC, Pryor was president of the Dance Council of Majors and a member of the Phoenix Repertory Dance Company. She became quite fond of the dance faculty, especially Elizabeth Walton, former department chair. "I've always adored Liz from afar," says Pryor. "I'd like to someday become the caliber of teacher that she is."

In fact, Pryor continues to learn from Walton, who is a guest artist-in-residence at Dance Foundations. "When Liz is teaching," Prior says, "I frequently find myself sneaking in and taking the classes too."
