The goal of the Meyerhoff Program is to increase the number of minorities, particularly African-Americans, who earn Ph.D.s in the sciences, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. And it is doing just that. Upon graduation, 95 percent of Meyerhoff Scholars immediately go on to professional and graduate schools.

Students chosen for the program are among the best and brightest. The average combined SAT score for incoming freshmen in the program for fall 1997 is 1285, considerably higher than the national average for African-American freshmen. And a student's success is further assured by the individualized attention Meyerhoff Scholars receive. All Scholars attend regular meetings with UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski. And the Meyerhoff Program staff work with students on a day-to-day basis regarding academic advisement, counseling, scheduling, and completing the necessary documents for graduate school and summer internships.
