UMBC offers the resources of a large university with the access to opportunities of a small one. The feeling of community is strong. Small in size and intimate in feel, it is a campus where students easily form friendships with faculty, staff, and each other. A rapidly developing public research and doctoral-level university, UMBC emphasizes high quality undergraduate instruction. UMBC is becoming a national model for medium-sized research universities and a major center for intellectual activity in the Baltimore region. Recognized particularly for the strength of its focused graduate and research programs in science, engineering, and public policy, UMBC also offers a variety of undergraduate programs, supported by a strong liberal arts and sciences core. Students are encouraged to learn for learning's sake, to take joy in discovery. Established in 1966, UMBC is located on 500 wooded acres 15 minutes from downtown Baltimore and just 35 miles north of Washington, D.C. Approximately 10,000 students are enrolled at UMBC and come from 45 states and over 70 foreign countries, creating a diverse and exciting atmosphere. |
