While the Meyerhoff Program staff keeps students focused and on track on campus, formal mentoring relationships with scientists, physicians, and engineers from the larger community provide a different form of guidance. Mentors help students shape their long-term academic goals and solidify their career aspirations.
Whether formal or informal, the goal of mentoring is to keep Meyerhoff Scholars focused on graduate degrees and careers as researchers. While many current Scholars enter the program wanting to pursue terminal degrees in STEM fields, they still have a plethora of questions and challenges that need to be address. Who better to address their questions and serve as examples than those who have traveled the path more recently?
We know that Meyerhoff alumni can be an invaluable source of support, encouragement, and motivation for current scholars. Therefore, it is our hope that by spring 2011 a mentoring program is created to match alumni with current students.
