THE 2008 PROGRAM:

Eight Students will be selected for Summer 2008

Student scholars will select a summer research topic in either Bioinformatics, under the direction of Co-director Professor Anindya Roy or Computational Neurobiology, under the direction of Program Director Professor Jonathan Bell.

PROGRAM DATES:
Move-In Date: Sunday, June 15, 2008
Program Dates: Monday, June 16 - Friday, August 8, 2008
CNMS Summer Research Fest: Wednesday, August 6, 2008

PROGRAM STRUCTURE:
• Eight-week program
• Preparatory workshops
• Work on a significant research project
• Preparation and delivery of a report and scientific poster
• Program includes various educational and social activities with other undergraduate researchers, including a summer GRE Preparation Course and the 2008 UMBC Summer Undergraduate Research Fest

BENEFITS
• Paid cohort campus apartment housing;
• $3,500 in summer stipend;
• $150 for research related supplies;
• Up to $200 travel stipend for approved scientific meeting or activity
• Office space, computer account, and library access
• Work with senior math and statistics researchers, along with graduate student technical support

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
• Be an undergraduate with a minimum of 30 college credits; at least a B average overall; course work must include: 2 semesters calculus; 1 semester linear algebra; 1 semester statistics; one semester in biology, chemistry or physics; and some exposure to programming
• Demonstrate an interest in applying mathematics or statistics to biomedical problems. (NOTE: Research projects available will be either mathematical topics in neuroscience or statistical topics in bioinformatics/imaging.)
• Be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
