CNMS Annual Summer
Undergraduate Research Fest (SURF) at UMBC

2008 SURF HIGHLIGHTS

Forty-nine talented young scientists from near and far presented their summer research projects at the Eleventh Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Fest at UMBC on Wednesday, August 6, 2008. From neutron stars to pharmocodynamic investigations, a variety of topics were presented by students and/or programs affiliated with the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences. All oral and poster presentations were given in the First Floor Gallery of the Albin O. Kuhn Library at UMBC. An estimated 100 faculty and guests attended the conference to learn about the student research projects conducted over Summer 2008.

Dr. Janice Zengel, Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Biological Sciences at UMBC, was honored as the recipient of the Summer 2008 Mentor Award for Outstanding Support and Service to Undergraduate Researchers. Dr. Zengel has mentored or co-mentored over 100 undergraduate and high school students who have participated in the Lindahl/Zengel research group doing significant original projects related to ribosome biogenesis. Dr. Zengel has directed the EMBARC Program, an NSF REU Site at UMBC focused on the Structure and Function of Biological Molecules, since 2005.
