CNMS Annual Summer
Undergraduate Research Fest (SURF) at UMBC

2010 SURF HIGHLIGHTS

Sixty-five bright and talented young scientists from near and far presented their summer research projects at the Thirteenth Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Fest at UMBC on Wednesday, August 11, 2010. A variety of topics were presented by students and/or programs affiliated with the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences from studying morphine tolerance and dependence in mice to analyzing the effects of aerosol particles on the Earth's climate. The oral and poster presentations were given on the Seventh Floor of the Albin O. Kuhn Library at UMBC. Many UMBC faculty and invited guests attended the conference to learn about the student research projects conducted over Summer 2010. Our summer researchers garnered suport from a variety of sources, including UMBC, MARC U*STAR, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the National Science Foundation's Interdisciplinary Program in High Performance Computing, the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology, the NIH, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, FASEB, The Leadership Alliance, and the UMBC Graduate School.

Thirty dedicated 2010 Summer Research Mentors, along with numerous post docs, graduate students, and experienced undergraduate researchers were honored for their ongoing support of student research experiences and their willingness to invest their time and resources in mentoring students over the summer.
