CNMS Annual Summer
Undergraduate Research Fest (SURF) at UMBC

Presenters are asked to review the following guidelines and contact either their program coordinators or mentors with questions. They may also contact CNMS Office of the Dean at surf@umbc.edu.

Poster numbers with presenter names will be attached to each poster display board.

Link for poster session and number assignments - will be available August 3

Cell phones must be turned off during the entire event. This is important.

All poster presenters are required to attend the opening and all oral presentations - Presenters should plan to be seated no later than 8:55 a.m. Carefully posed questions about the research presentations add to the experience.

There will be push pins available for presenters to use during the Research Fest. If presenters need push pins, they should plan to ask for them when they pick up their name badges at the Reception Table.

Presenters should wear their name badges during the entire event.

Poster presenters should plan to put up their posters between 8:30 a.m. and 8:50 a.m.

A minimum of business casual attire is appropriate. Presenters should not wear jeans, halter tops, tee shirts, baseball caps, or other inappropriate items of clothing.

There will be some quick breads and beverages available to eat in the morning. Presenters should be sure to eat to avoid the risk fainting!!

Poster presenters should plan to stand by their posters during their assigned 45-minute poster session.

Poster presenters should consider planning a summary or 'take home' message about their research for visitors to their posters.

Presenters should support their fellow researchers during the other poster session by taking the time to visit other posters and learn about the many other research projects being conducted this summer.

Presenters should thank their mentors for making their research experience possible.

It is important to thank all guests for coming. Everyone is so busy -- their attendance is a true gift.

Presenters should take down the posters AFTER the closing ceremony and no later than 1:00 p.m.

If a presenter's name is spelled wrong on the certificate that is presented during the closing ceremony, they should let Mrs. Sutphin know as soon as possible and a new and corrected one will be made for them.

Oral Presenters will practice their presentations the day before the event and they are asked to put their visual presentation files on a thumb drive or other portable storage device and meet in the CNMS Dean's Office at 1:45 p.m. in the University Center (UC 116) on Tuesday, August 7, 2012.

Presenters - don't forget to smile and enjoy the experience.

Best wishes for a successful Summer Undergraduate Research Fest!
