PROGRAM INFORMATION
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is recruiting Maryland high school science teachers for the second phase of its comprehensive 2008-2009 professional development program in chemistry. The second phase of the program begins June 23, 2008. It is designed to enhance participant success in the classroom and will help teachers to become highly qualified in chemistry through face-to-face and online instruction with UMBC faculty. An education coordinator, who is an experienced high school science teacher, will help participants develop specific applications for course concepts and procedures. Workshop experiences have been designed to be easily repeated by participants in their classrooms and/or to reinforce teacher knowledge of chemistry topics.
Applicants must teach in public or private high schools in the State of Maryland. Teachers who do not meet the criteria for "highly qualified" and those who teach in high need districts or schools are particularly encouraged to apply.
Participants joining the second-phase of the program have the opportunity to earn up to $1,575 in attendance-based stipends and also to earn up to three graduate credits in Chemistry for successful completion of the program. Grant support will cover all 2008-2009 TQC Program participant tuition costs.
Applications, which can be downloaded from this website and will be accepted until the program is filled. Paper copies of the brochure were sent to every high school's science supervisor in the State of Maryland and to members of the NSTA.
Please note that UMBC has been funded to continue this program in 2009-2010.
