November 4, 2002 - So let me get this straight. All the #1 seeds in the NFL and CFL played today, and they all lost? That doesn't happen all too often. Apparently all but 5 of the Beer men left 10 minutes into the game, giving Deep In Her Steez a free ride into the finals. I guess they figured they'd get their loss over with early. And Deep in Her Steez wouldn't even be there if they didn't pull off a one-point overtime win by half a yard over Oh Shizzle while playing down a man for the entire overtime period. Oh Shizzle scored and went for two to either win the game or lose it and came up half a yard shy. And on the other side, the UMBC's Finest vs. Heavy Glow game was one of the most grueling I ever had to sit through. The teams were tied at 0 going into overtime. Chip picked off a pass to give UMBC's Finest the advantage, and after going backwards on their first play, Rich finally remembered what worked all year long and threw the ball to Neil for the 6-0 overtime victory. I didn't get a chance to see the semi-final game between UMBC's Finest and the Hilltop Hustlaz, but apparently the return of the Rileys was too much for Omar and Sam. Also, Juicy's coaching skills improved their scoring output from 0 to 18 in three days. But apparently, the Hustlaz still had a chance to score with a minute left that would have at least tied the game if not won it for them, when a miscommunication between quarterback and receiver resulted in another clutch Chip interception returned for a touchdown which sealed the Hustlaz fate.

The CFL suffered the same fate. I know I said it before, but watch out for SAE. They beat the long bomber Psi Delt guys with a stingy defense and a scrambling quarterback who attracted so much attention, his guys could get wide open and made for an easy pass. Well, they were clicking on all cylinders today. They dominated the Dawgs on both sides of the ball and will ride the outstanding rush blocking of the man they call "Kuch" into the finals. The team they will see in the finals was probably last on my list of prospects from that side of the bracket. Fun & Gun built up a 27-0 lead when Az pulled his hamstring and had to leave the game just into the second half. MC Ringerz got a little momentum and then more momentum and scored 19 unanswered points, but time ran out on them in the end. So with Az out, I expected No Chance to trample all over them. Within 10 minutes, No Chance found themselves down 14-0. Saadi from Fun & Gun ended the game with something like 4 picks, including one he ran back for a touchdown. Injuries to Tom and Noah apparently gave a lot of momentum to Fun & Gun and they ran with it all the way to the finals. But can they beat SAE without Az? SAE can match them speed for speed and have the pass rush to run whoever they have back there now all over the place. But Fun & Gun also play a smart contain defense and can easily stifle Rob and Paul if played correctly. Even without Az. But we'll see on Wednesday I guess.

Lambda Chi is ranked #2. That alone should tell you how wacky the coed league has been. How the heck did they beat Mufasa and M2K2? I don't know. But here's what I do know. The Bums and Mufasa is probably UMBC intramural football's best rivalry. In the age of free agency, and with an average of one fraternity biting the dust every year, people just don't stay on a team or keep the same team name for long enough nowadays. But there's a lot of trash talk and some serious competition when these two teams get together. The Bums beat Mufasa in the regular season last year only to lose to them by a single point in the championship game. Again, the Bums edged them out 27-20 in what Geoff Rupert called the greatest game of the regular season this year. But they'll have to get by Omar and his M2K2 gang, and the surprise of the year in Lambda Chi, to get to rekindle that rivalry in the championship game. Wow. Lambda Chi. I still don't get it.
