Five Years and
Running
Mens - The most exciting play of the entire season probably came
at the manager's meeting. The announcement was made that Dave Riley was withdrawling his team from the mens
handball league. The league's balance of power suddenly swung to the Predators. And then Ben and Eric said they needed free agents and picked up the
rest of Riley's aborted roster. The balance tipped again. I know
Dave Riley is but only one person, but he brings with him Neil Copeland and his younger cousin, John
Riley. Besides, he's a really good one person. It just so
happens that the Milwuakee Beers had enough field
talent to compliment Neil and Dave (I don't know where Ethan came from, but he really fell into somethng good), and a
good keeper in their co-captain, Ben Weinreich. And to be a good
keeper in this sport on this level, you don't necessarily need the
quickest reflexes or the best goal awareness. You just need to be
nuts. People that enjoy to get hit in the face with the ball are the
only people that will make good goalkeepers in this league. Ask Leon. I like to think I was a good soccer
goaltender and I would jump out of the way of a breakaway handball
shot. Anyway, the Predators came out ready for the powerhouse. These
two teams had not met in the regular season and it took a while for
the Predators to adjust to the speed of the Beers, on both offense
and defense. Coming out of halftime down 6-3, the Predators made
their run. They went on a 4-1 run in the beginning of the second
half to even the score at 7 apiece. And then Ethan went on a tear.
He scored 3 goals in the last 5 minutes and assisted another to
ensure the Beers their 14-10 championship victory. Congratulations
to the Milwaukee Beers, especially the new ones, on their first ever
championship in their first ever sport. And my heart goes out to the
Predators, who lost to Riley in two straight handball championships. Gonzo said he's
sick of losing to him in the finals. Well, I did it for three years
before you were even in that game Gonzo. I know where you're coming
from.

Coed - Well, we
got to finally run a coed handball tournament for the first time in
UMBC history. At least we haven't had one in the past 9 years, and I
assume that there's not a coed handball tournament that predates me.
The tournament consisted of two teams. Good With Balls headed by Jason Woody, RA of Erickson Hall, and the Blu Ballaz,
captained by Hessam Afshari of the Engineering
School and Kimberly Ecle, RA of New
Hall. They played the best two of three games and put on a
pretty exciting show. Woody walked away with 12-10 wins in the first
two games, thus winning the tournament. When asked if they wanted to
play the third game just for fun, both teams voted unanimously to
play it. Because handball is fun and that's what the game is about.
So they got together for the third game, and Hessam managed to pull
out a 13-12 victory in the Irrelevant Bowl. But a good time was had
by all. Unfortunately, by the time the game was over and we took the
picture, all the girls had left. So I was going to try to edit in a
picture of Heidi Klum for them. But it turns out I don't have that
much free time. So congratulations to Woody, Walsh, Colin and the rest of the crew for their first
ever intramural championship. And a congrats to Kim also. Both of
you guys are in the runnings for the end of the year RA
pizza party. Hopefully this will inspire more RAs to get
teams together. I know I'll see Jason again.
