DYNASTY
Starring George White as Joe
Montana and Mike Aring as Jerry Rice, the
Dawgs have managed to establish an arena football
dynasty much like the 49ers did back in the 80s. I guess that makes
Tim Ballor the Ronnie Lott and Brian
Moore the Roger Craig (sure, why not?). They have gone
13-0-1 in their last 2 seasons, their only tie having come at
the hands of a rather surprisingly talented Secret
Agent team led by the one guy who happened to know their
playing style better than anyone else (me). But in the end, the
Secret Agents wouldn't even get to avenge their only tie of their
undefeated season, having their season cut short by a new-look
Dirty South team. The Secret Agents had beaten
Dirty South easily by 3 touchdowns in the regular season. But
Mike Branson came out firing. He had seen the
Secret Agent defense led by Steve Bloom and managed
quite an impressive offensive attack the second time around. Led on
the other end by Jay Macelhenney, Dirty South
managed to shut out the Secret Agent offense for a better part of
the game. In fact, not only was the 22 points that the Secret
Agents scored the lowest point total of their season, but it was
less than half of their 44.3 point average. And so ended the legacy
of the free agent team. But they had a pretty impressive run in the
2003-04 season, and I'm sure you probably haven't seen the last of
Jeremy and Tom either. Props to
Shorty Got Shook for beating out the
Recruits for the last playoff spot. But their run
ended abruptly, as they were standing in the way of the Dawgs'
second consecutive championship. The Dawgs tore up Shorty 63-21 in
the other semi-final game, ending the well-orchestrated season that
Chris Reese and Nick Shade
put together. And so the Dawgs were to face Dirty South in
the championship game. And I know they were much happier to see
Dirty South there instead of the Secret Agents. I know this because
they told me. But Dirty South apparently decided to get a lot better
between the regular season and the playoffs. The Dawgs beat them by
4 touchdowns in the regular season. Not so easy this time. Mike B.
and his troops had no problem finding the hole in the Dawgs' zone
coverage and they traded touchdowns for a bulk of the game. In the
end, Dirty South came up one touchdown short, but showed the rest of
the intramural football world that they meant business. And all the
congratulations in the world to the Dawgs for their repeat
undefeated season, but seeing as how Mike B. is a freshman here, I
would wager to say that between outdoor and arena, he'll leave
school here with at least 4 t-shirts. Unless he's one of those
overachievers that graduates in 4 years. So good luck to you, Mike.
And best of luck to Jeremy and the rest of the free agent crew. And
I think I can squeeze some good luck wishes in there for Nick and
Chris. As far as the Dawgs are concerned, they're going
to need a lot more luck than I can give them. But then
again, the Niners found Steve Young after Joe Montana, so who knows?

FRAT
ATTACK
First of all, props to SAE
for not only winning the whole thing, but also for doing it with
only people in the fraternity. I know what goes on with your greek
points, or at least I have some idea. SAE doesn't recruit "ringers"
just to win. And before I get yelled at, Pi Kapp is
the just as loyal to their brothers. But enough about all that
crap. Let's talk football. Now I'd be lying if I said I saw more
than two SAE games all year, but it just looks like a different game
with Rob Symonds out there. I don't care how many
surgeries he's had on his knees, he can run circles around
most anybody out on the football field. They managed to
shut down DJ and the Skullz in the
first round 35-14, while Teke snuck by The
Best in the lowest scoring game of the year (14-7) in the
semi-finals. And so SAE had their rematch with Teke from two weeks
ago when Teke had upset them 35-28 to dethrone them from their top
seed. But SAE busted out of the gates in the championship and never
looked back. The first play of the game was an interception returned
for a touchdown by Nikhil. Or Chris
Casini. Or somebody else. It's tough to remember because
the next three Teke possessions all ended up in interceptions and
they all kinda run together. It was pretty brutal. At the end of the
half, Teke finally looked like they were getting going when
Tom Hamlett caught a pass. But while running, he
thought to pitch the ball back to one of his teammates. It went
right into Rob's hands, who threw a touchdown pass on the next play
as time ran out. In the second half, Teke finally connected with a
few of their bombs to at least put some points on the board, but the
championship game was a total domination. Other than the
SAE-Beefcake game in the regular season,
this game not only had the highest team point total,
but also the highest margain of victory. Well done, SAE. Now somebody keep
Rob healthy so you have a fighting chance in outdoor next year.

SHIRT
HOGS
Come on guy, let somebody else get the
shirts! But as good as the guys on the team are, that isn't the
reason they won. When it came to girls in the coed league, there was
Steph Allen and then there was everybody else.
Maybe I'm a little biased, but anybody who saw her play would tell
you the same thing. She ran at a different speed than everybody else
out there. To my knowledge, she's the only intramural particpant
we've ever had who has led the entire NCAA in any individual
statitstical category (WLAX - most draw controls, 2002). So there's
that she has going for her. And when you're busy double-covering
her, Lauren, Amy or
Alexis could sneak away with a catch too. And so
the Dawgs blew by Teke in the
semifinals 56-14. They would meet the Recruits in
the finals after the Recruits upset Rich,
Seeni and the Res Life All-Stars
37-29 in the other semi-final game. And lining up across from Steph
was probably the girl who could give her the most problems of all
the other girls in the league, Janet Banas. Janet
was also the only player returning too the league this year from
ADOBO, the coed champions of last year. And I must
say that the Recruits did a heck of a job against the entire Dawgs
team, holding them to only 29 points, their lowest scoring total of
the year. But the Recruits couldn't muster up enough offense to make
it work for them. They could only manage 15 points and when you play
the Dawgs, that isn't going to be enough. But I will say about the
season that I'm happy to see that Teke and the Recruits made it to
the playoffs because both of these teams were teams that Geoff and I
had to sort of manufacture so that we would have a coed league (as
well as the Harbor Hotties). Thanks to
Keith, Justin,
Candice and Frank for helping us out and making the tournament a lot more fun than
it would have been with two teams playing each other every weekend.

April 29,
2004 - Due to a change in programming on the WB, the CFL
Championship and the Coed Championship game times scheduled for
Sunday May, 2 have been switched. The CFL Championship
(Teke vs SAE) will now be played at 7:00 and will be shown
live after a re-run of Jamie Kennedy Experience. The Coed
Championship (Dawgs vs The Recruits) will be played at 8:00
followed by an all new episode of Charmed.
April 19, 2004 - And Pi Kapp is out. The smoke has cleared out and we
can finally figure out who is playing who in the semi-finals in
every league. The NFL was easy. The Secret Agents
didn't wind up beating Shorty Got Shook by 65, so
they remain the #2 seed and play #3 Dirty South
next week and the #1 Dawgs will go on to face #4
Shorty Got Shook. In coed action, Teke fought
valiantly to erase an 8 point deficit to tie The
Recruits at 38 in the last 7 seconds of the game,
but still came up short in the standings as they needed a win to
secure the #4 seed (though somebody may have misinformed them before
the game). So they earned the first round matchup against the #1
Dawgs next week, while the #3 Recruits draw the #2
Res Life All Stars. In coed, there was a lot of
wacky stuff going on. Pi Kapp lost their game to
Teke and The Best handled
Beefcake, giving The Best the last playoff spot.
And Teke won both of their games, giving them the #1 seed and a
first round matchup against #4 The Best. The Skullz
managed to hand SAE their second loss of the
day, evening up the season series and earning them a right
to play them again next week in the #2 vs. #3 semi-final game. And
that's everybody. Check out the schedules on the net!
April 15, 2004 - One more week to go until the playoffs, so it's
time to start looking at who's gonna be in them. See, the NFL
schedule just came out and I'm in my football mood. So here goes.
NFL - We'll start with the easy one. The
Recruits and Punjabi Tigers are already
out, no matter what happens this weekend. In fact, even with two
games left to play, the standings are already set.
Dawgs will be the #1 seed, the Free
Agents will be #2, Dirty South will be #3
and Shorty Got Shook will
be the #4 seed. There is one possible exception. If the Free Agents
beat Shorty Got Shook by 65, they will have the same point
differential and their tie gives them the same head to head record,
so it would come down to points against, which currently favors the
Free Agents, but it depends on exactly how the Free Agents win by
65. If they win 65-0, then the Free Agents get the #1 seed. If they
win 73-8, the Dawgs will get the #1 seed. If they win 72-7, there
will be a coin toss. If the Free Agents win by 66 or more, they will
automatically get the #1 seed. But this will all be a moot point, I
can guarantee you.
Coed - This one
is actually pretty easy too. All four playoff teams have already
been determined and the top two (Dawgs and
Res Life All Stars) are respectively locked into
their positions. There are two coed games this weekend and
The Recruits play in both of them. One of their
games is against Teke. If they win or tie that
game, they get the #3 seed and Teke will be the #4. If they lose
that game, they'll have to win their other game against the Dawgs in
order to get a chance at the #3 seed. Both The Recruits and Teke
will then have a 3-3 record with a 1-1 record against each other and
we'll have to go to point differential, which currently favors Teke
by 25. And considering in this scenerio, Teke will be beating them,
their point differential will obviously get bigger, where The
Recruit's will get smaller. So they'd need to beat the Dawgs by a
considerable margin to even entertain that possibility. So they just
need to beat or tie Teke to get the #3. That other scenerio doesn't
look so good for them. Harbor Hotties are out.
CFL - Wow. The
only thing I can figure out is that SAE is
definately in, though they could be anywhere from #1 to #3, and
Beefcake is out at 0-5. With the four remaining
games this weekend, there is a relatively decent enough possibility
that 4 teams (Teke, Pi Kapp,
The Best, and Skullz) will all end
up with 3-3 records. That's gonna wack things up a bit. If that all
happens, we can't go to head-to-head because there isn't one team
who has either swept or been swept, so we'll have to go to point
differential, which currently favors Teke at +100, but I've got to
figure that's a misprint since I just added it up and according to
the website, 903 points have been scored this season and only 785
points have been scored against. Assuming there's not some mystery
invisible team that people scored 118 points against, we screwed up.
I'll get back to you with the CFL stuff tomorrow. But there are
basically 4 teams competing for 3 spots. If the Skullz beat SAE,
they'll be in. If Teke wins one of their two games, they'll also be
in. If Pi Kapp wins, they'll also get in provided there isn't the
four way tie we talked about before or a three way tie with The Best
and The Skullz. If the Skullz win and there happens to be a
three-way tie between Teke, Pi Kapp, and The Best, the Best will be
eliminated because they were swept by Teke and Pi Kapp in the
season. If Pi Kapp loses and the Best wins or ties OR if Pi Kapp
ties and the Best wins, The Best will steal the #4 seed after not
having won a game since February. Basically, try to win. Especially
if you're Pi Kapp or The Best. Or the Skullz. Or Teke. Please don't
make me have to figure out a four-way tie.
February 12, 2004 - So we finally figure out how many teams we have and the coed schedule is up online with the rest of them. Check it out and I'll see you Sunday!
February 12, 2004 - And I think you'll all be happy. Unless you're the manager
of a coed team, in which case you're going to have to wait until
next Sunday to play. The schedules for the NFL and CFL teams are
finished and online, but the coed schedules won't be ready until
next Wednesday (2/18) at the latest. But hey, in the meantime, the
NFL and CFL will go on. See you Sunday!
