HYBRID COURSE - This course explores the ways in which assumptions about and fears of gender, race and sexual orientation are exploited and manipulated by a variety of constituencies to create and sustain nationalist narratives and international relations. We will also consider the ways in which feminist activists around the world have responded to the use of women’s bodies and gender roles in nationalist projects. Globalism and the Evolving Dynamics of
International Terrorism

SHADY GROVE - This course will explore how factors leading to greater global involvement and internationalism have fueled the flames of international terrorism. In particular, it will explore how American foreign policy activities---ranging from U.S. cold war strategies to interactions in the Middle East---have both restrained and advanced global terrorism. The course will also evaluate the primary policy positions of the major Democrat and Republican presidential candidates to evaluate which ones would most likely forge a workable anti-terrorism strategy worldwide. The course will employ major international relations theories and foreign policy readings as tools to explain present conditions and to develop realistic planning scenarios. Outside experts and/or the representatives of the likely Presidential nominees will be invited to make presentations to the class. Note: This course is held at The Universities at Shady Grove. Hockey, “Canadian Bacon” and maple syrup—is that all there is to Canada? How do their political and financial institutions compare to the United States, Europe, and other nations? Is Canada a socialist country, or a mirror of American-style capitalism? Do they have defense forces that participate in international peacekeeping? What are they doing about issues familiar to Americans— the homeless, a poor indigenous population and pockets of white supremacism? Is the border secure? Does Quebec still want independence, and is “Cascadia” a new separatist group? This course focuses on the history of Canada from independence to present with an assessment of their similarities and differences with the United States.
