| Purpose:
Faculty Horizons is intended to provide upper level graduate
students and post doctoral fellows, particularly women, with many
of the skills necessary to become successful tenure-track faculty
members in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) fields. The skills learned at this workshop will be essential
in preparing scientists for a successful career!
Program
Costs: The
cost of registration for Faculty Horizons is paid for by the UMBC
ADVANCE grant. All meals during the event and transportation between
the hotel and workshops will be covered by the registration costs.
Participants will be reimbursed for workshop expenses, including
travel and hotel accomodations for up to $400 (please see details
under reimbursement section). The UMBC ADVANCE grant from the National
Science Foundation (NSF) is funding the event.
Application:
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. Priority will
be given to women post doctoral fellows, and women post doctoral
fellows and senior-level graduate students from underrepresented
groups. Everyone must apply on-line and be selected to attend this
workshop due to the limited space and funding. Please submit
your application early! All applications must be received by
July 1, 2004. Be sure to complete all of the requested information.
Applicants will be notified once the completed application is received.
Those selected to attend the conference will be notified within
two weeks of their submitted application.
Once
you have been selected to attend the conference, please make travel
arrangements immediately to obtain the best rates!
Travel:
Participants are responsible for making their travel arrangements.
All reservations should be made with Omega Travel, Columbia, Maryland,
410.740.7330 or 800.888.3378 in order to ensure easy reimbursement
for your ticket. When making your travel itinerary, inform the travel
agent that you are with the UMBC Faculty Horizons Program. Remember,
when making your arrangements that the program begins at 2:00 p.m.
on August 5, 2004 and the program will end on August 7, 2004 at
1:00 p.m. It is best to purchase the ticket with a credit card.
Please
note
-- participants who do not use this agency will need to provide
original receipts of their ticket to receive reimbursement.
Travel
by Air: Arrangements should be made to/from the Baltimore
Washington International (BWI) Airport. You will be issued an
electronic ticket in the form of an email from Omega Travel. Print
and keep it with you at all times as this will be your official
travel document.
Travel
by Train: From points north of Baltimore, you should
get off at the second Baltimore stop---Baltimore BWI Amtrak station.
From points south of Baltimore, you will get off at the first
stop---Baltimore BWI Amtrak station. You will be mailed a paper
ticket for your train travel from the travel agency.
Travel by Car: For those who will be driving
to the BWI Airport Marriott, please click
here or contact the hotel for directions. There is a parking lot
on the hotel property where you can park for no fee.
Lodging:
A reservation will be made for you at the BWI Airport Marriott.
Room rates are $99 + tax per person per night for a single occupancy
and $49.50 + tax per person per night for double occupancy. If you
have indicated on your application that you would like to share
a room with another participant, we will do our best to accommodate

feature an indoor pool, whirlpool, and health club among many other
amenities.
Shuttle
to/from the Hotel: After picking up your luggage at the
airport, please call the hotel on a courtesy phone in the airport
for their shuttle to pick you up and take you the hotel. From the
train station you can call the hotel and request the hotel shuttle
for a pickup from the train station. The hotel shuttle leaves the
airport every twenty minutes to return you to the airport.
Special Needs: If you have any special needs, including
dietary please inform the Program Coordinator after acceptance into
the Faculty Horizons workshop.
Reimbursement: Participants are required to make
all travel arrangements to and from the workshop (please see above
for Travel Agent information). Reimbursement will be provided by
the NSF ADVANCE grant at UMBC up to $400. This will include but
is not limited to:
Air and train tickets to/from the conference, including the
$24 service fee for airline tickets.
Mileage at $.34 per mile to/from the conference for those people who choose to drive to the conference.
Hotel accommodations.
Parking at airport parking lots.
Upon your arrival at Faculty Horizons, we will begin the process
of reimbursement for this expense. You will receive your reimbursement
approximately 30 business days after receipt of your expense statement,
which will be provided to at Faculty Horizons.
