A lunch hour workshop series designed to ensure faculty success. Lunch will be provided at all workshops. Please RSVP to advance@umbc.edu.

  • Fundamentals of Proposal Preparation
    October 10, 2008, Commons 331, 12:00 - 3:00 p.m.

    This introductory workshop is for faculty who either are new to the art of proposal preparation or wish to increase their probabilities of success. It is appropriate for those in all research areas, including the sciences, social sciences and humanities. Faculty who are planning to submit proposals in the areas of teaching and training are also invited to attend.

    President, Harvey Mudd College

    Gender and Computing
    This talk explores how girls and women differ from boys and men in their uses of and attitude toward computing technology and how this affects career choices and technology design. From playing video games to pursuing computing careers, the participation of females is lower than that of males. Why is this? Dr. Klawe will discuss research findings, as well as best practices for increasing the participation of girls and women in computing.

    Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Johns Hopkins University

    Kristina M. Johnson was appointed provost and senior vice president of academic affairs of The Johns Hopkins University on Sept. 1, 2007. An electrical engineer with 129 U.S. and foreign patents and co-founder of several start-up companies, she is the university's 12th provost and the first woman to hold the university's second-ranking position. Johnson had previously served as dean of Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering.

UMBC Named One of the Top 5 "Up-and-Coming" Schools by U.S. News & World Report

UMBC Healing through Design, Professor's Breakthrough Highlighted in Nature Chemical Biology


Elsa Garcin, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was co-author of a recent Nature Chemical Biology article that described a new method to specifically target harmful NO production while preserving beneficial NO levels. Garcin, who came to UMBC from the Scripps Research Institute, co-authored "Anchored plasticity opens doors for selective inhibitor design in nitric oxide synthase" with her former Scripps colleague, Elizabeth Getzoff.
