“Looking to the Past to Change the Future”
On April 11, 2009, the Africana Studies Council of Majors sponsored a fundraising program and dinner in the Skylight Room of the Commons Building to raise fundsto support its programs and activities, and to increase greater awareness of the Council, the discipline, and the Africana Studies Department.
Invitees to the program included all UMBC students, alumni, faculty, staff, and honored guests. Attendees were treated to a night of classic performance art from students of the African Diaspora. Among the presenters were poets, dancers, and musicians representing the following campus organizations: Ethiopian Students Association, African Students Association, Black Student Union, Student Government Association, Africana Studies Council of Majors, as well as representatives of various campus fraternity and sorority groups. The program also included presentations by student leaders extolling the benefits of a major or minor in Africana Studies.
