Definitions of Program Abbreviations

You will find several abbreviations for program names in the directory. They are listed below with thier definitions.

ABE (Adult Basic Education)
Adult Basic Education is a federally funded basic skills program that provides instruction in classroom sites throughout Maryland. Basic skills teachers work with low literacy students, as well as more highly skilled students.

GED (General Educational Development) Program
The General Educational Development Program prepares students to take the GED tests; successful completion of the tests results in the awarding of a Maryland High School diploma.

EDP (The External Diploma Program) or MAEDP (The Maryland Adult External iploma Program)
The External Diploma Program is a competency-based program that provides an alternative route to a high school diploma for adults.

ESL (English as a Second Language) or ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
ESL or ESOL programs provide literacy classes for the foreign-born.
