Minor Requirements

The American Studies Department also offers a minor in American Studies. The minor is especially beneficial if you are majoring in the humanities/arts and social sciences, where a strong background in American society and culture can effectively complement your major course of study. The minor consists of 18 credits. Minors are required to take all the core courses except for the senior research seminar (AMST 100, 290, 391, 392), and two additional American Studies topic courses, at least one at the upper level.

The department offers five options for the emphasis areas:

Communications, Media, and the Arts

(Includes courses in Popular Culture, Art, Material Culture, Public Culture)

I. The AMST Core (18 credits)

  • AMST 100 Ideas and Images in American Culture
  • AMST 290 Approaches in American Studies (seminar)
  • AMST 391 Studies in American Culture (Fall)
  • AMST 392 Studies in American Society (Spring)

  • and one additional AMST course at the 300-400 level

II. The Emphasis (18 credits, at least 12 at the 300-400 level).

Three courses must be selected from the following emphasis course list:

No more than 3 performance or technique courses may be counted toward the major.

Two social work courses apply to the AMST major:

SOWK 481 Social Work Methods II: A Generalist Approach to Practice

Three courses must be selected from the following emphasis course list:

AMST 310 Gender and Inequality in U.S. Society
AMST 355 Special Topics in Cultural Policy
AMST 380 Community in America
AMST 382 Perspectives on the Family
AMST 384 Perspectives on Childhood
AMST 410 Seminar in Community and Diversity

The remaining course may be selected from the preceding list or from related courses in other departments, as approved by your advisor.
