student on site Students majoring in Ancient Studies may participate in archaeological excavations and learn artifactual analysis, both locally and further afield, by enrolling in ARCH 397 (permission required). During the regular school year, and in the summer, fieldwork opportunities are available locally. In the summer, students can also join excavation teams working in many regions of the world. In the past, students have worked at sites as close as downtown Baltimore and as far away as Israel or Alaska. Scholarships are available for especially qualified majors who want to excavate at distant sites over the summer. Application forms are available in the Ancient Studies Department Office in the spring semester. Many programs are listed in our Web Resources.

Students planning to get credits for fieldwork outside of the United States must go through the Study Abroad Office, whether the credits are transferred or through a UMBC course like ARCH 397.

Current Fieldwork Opportunities:

Excavate at colonial: London Town in Anne Arundel County.
Learn professional techniques of managing collections of archaeological material with the Maryland Historical Trust, Catonsville.
Excavate in Fells Point.

Many other opportunities are listed in our Web Resources. We have also compiled a chart describing these fieldwork and volunteer programs.
