Thinking about Ancient Studies?

Prospective Ancient Studies students should familiarize themselves with our program. Using the links at left, a variety of information is available to high school students, potential transfer students, and parents.

Learning Goals for Ancient Studies Majors:

1. Be able to translate Greek and/or Latin texts.
2. Be able to analyze the grammar and syntax of Greek and/or Latin.
3. Be conversant with Greek and Roman myths, legends, and stories.
4. Be able to describe basic elements of the society, political world and material culture
    of the Greeks, Romans, and other peoples of the Mediterranean.
5. Be able to analyze material remains from at least one cultural period for specific
    cultural factors (e.g. governmental, economic, social, technological, commercial,
    religious and ritual organization).
6. Be able to evaluate sources of information for people of the past.
7. Be able to develop a thesis about an ancient culture and scholarly evidence and
    support it with ancient evidence and the studies of modern scholars.
8. Be able to communicate research findings clearly in written presentations.

 

These learning goals are consistent with the following of the UMBC Student Learning Outcomes: Oral and Written Communication (I), Critical Analysis and Reasoning (III), and Information Literacy (IV).
