SCHOLARSHIPS The Diane Zdenek Scholarship Friends of Diane Zdenek, a well loved teacher of Latin in Columbia, Maryland have established a scholarship to honor her memory. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide funds to support an incoming student who plans to major in Ancient Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and has demonstrated outstanding academic accomplishment. Preference will be given to high school graduates from Howard County. In the event no incoming student meets the criteria, the scholarship may be awarded to a current Ancient Studies major, to support his/her ability to participate in the Ancient Studies study/travel programs. The award will be worth $500. For more information, contact the Department Chairperson. Summer Excavation or Study Abroad for upper level ANCS majors Upper level Ancient Studies majors may apply for a scholarship to study abroad, at an accredited summer program specializing in ancient cultures, or to excavate at training excavations. The application process takes place in the first half of the spring semester and is announced in Ancient Studies classes. Preference is given to students having completed or currently enrolled in Greek or Latin 201. For more information, contact Professor Goldberg or Professor Koehler. Student Assistantships for Study-Travel for upper level ANCS majors Student Assistantships are available to enable qualified, upper level Ancient Studies majors to participate in the ANCS Study Travel courses. The application process takes place in the first half of the spring semester and is announced in Ancient Studies classes. Preference is given to students having completed or currently enrolled in Greek or Latin 201. For more information, contact the professor in charge of the particular course. The following scholarships are available for summer study, excavation and/or trip assistantships. All awards are competitive. Christopher Sherwin Award Endowed by Jack and Carol Mullen, 1972 graduates of UMBC, in memory of Dr. Walter Sherwin's son Christopher, it enables students to participate in study/travel and excavation opportunities. Robert and Jane Shedd Award in Ancient Studies Endowed in honor of Robert Shedd, Chairman of the Division of Humanities when UMBC opened in 1966, a strong supporter of Ancient Studies, to enable students to participate in excavations and study/travel programs. William and Martha Christopher Scholarship Award In the process of being endowed in honor of her parents by Barbara Christopher Quinn, Ancient Studies major who graduated in 1978, to help students to participate in excavations and study/travel programs. Explorers Club Washington Group Given by Phyllis and E. Harvey Schreter, friends of the Ancient Studies Department, for a student to excavate each summer from 1998-2003. This award is administered by the Explorers Club Washington Group and is the only one given by them to an undergraduate. Applications are made to the Explorers Club through the Ancient Studies Department. |
