Ancient Studies 301:  Ancient Civilizations

Southern France and Paris, March 2002

(Links to travelers' web pages are at the end of this page.)

The Greeks and the Romans in southern France, the medieval and the modern in Paris, the aromas and sights of an extraordinary culture rich in cuisine, architecture, and history made our trip an exciting adventure into the past as well as in the present.  The Ancient Studies Department's 2002 trip to southern France and Paris departed late Friday, March 22, 2002, from  BWI, flew to London, then on to Marseilles, and continued immediately via private bus to Aix-en-Provence, where we spent the night.

Our destinations included Aix, Nice, Orange, Arles, Avignon, Pont du Gard, Glanum, Vaucluse, Les Baux and more before heading to visit Paris and its splendors.

Although the charm and quaintness of the Midi beguiled us, Paris's wealth of grands boulevards,  museums,  monuments, architecture, 14 million inhabitants, and haute cuisine often overwhelmed us.

We flew home from Paris via London and arrived Saturday, March 29, 2002, fatigued, happy, satisfied, and ready to go back.

Academic  Credit

Many of our 35 travelers decided to take Ancient Studies 301 for academic credit.  During the winter and spring sessions pre-trip meetings were held at UMBC, where Professors Sherwin and Rivkin spoke about the sites we were to visit and the cultures that settled them;  assigned and discussed readings associated with these sites and cultures; gave useful French language lessons; and supplied practical travel tips and the new currency, the euro.

Interest among the enthusiastic UMBC  tourists/photographers/seasoned travelers and their co-leaders was so overwhelmingly in favor of it, that Professors Sherwin and Rivkin decided to invite all interested participants to build this web page and its links to individuals' web pages to show what they saw and how they interpreted what they saw based on the lectures, the readings, and their on-site visits. All the pictures are their own.
