UMBC Moves Into Top
Carnegie Foundation Rankings
UMBC has vaulted into the top tier of research universities,
according to the Carnegie Foundation's latest classification
of American universities. The new ranking, which moves UMBC
into the rarefied company of such research powerhouses as Harvard,
Stanford, and MIT, recognizes UMBC's research mission and the
growth of its doctoral programs.
"Of the nearly 4,000 colleges and universities nationwide, UMBC
is one of only 152--the top 3.8 percent--to be
included in this elite category," explains Scott Bass, dean
of UMBC's Graduate School. "We are among the youngest institutions
to enter this group," Bass says.
To achieve entry into this highest echelon, which the Carnegie
Foundation designates Doctoral/Research Universities-Extensive,
an institution must award an average of 50
or more doctoral degrees a year in at least 15 different
academic disciplines.
"UMBC is positioning itself among a different cluster of
institutions than it would have five years ago," says Bass.
"And we're still moving."
