Top Honors for UMBC Debater

Chris Kelly, president of the UMBC debate team, took home the "top speaker" honors from this year's American Parliamentary Debate Association National Championship Tournament. In the tournament's two-on-two format, UMBC's team of Kelly and Troy Berman debated against teams from Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Swarthmore, and Boston University on topics ranging from whether trial juries should be able to question witnesses, to whether Galileo should have recanted his scientific findings in the face of church excommunication. Kelly's efforts earned him the most individual speaking points after the first phase of the competition, and the judges named him the top speaker in the tournament, in which 120 debaters on 60 teams from the nation's finest colleges and universities participated.
