UMBC Historian Wins First-Ever
e-Lincoln Prize
In Anne Rubin's office sits a plaster bust of Abraham Lincoln, sporting
sunglasses, a plastic bead necklace, and a UMBC cap on his head. The bust,
a congratulatory gift from one of her students, is a humorous reminder of an
extraordinary accomplishment: This winter Rubin, an assistant professor
of history in her first year on the UMBC faculty, was awarded one of the most
prestigious prizes in her field, the Lincoln Prize, for scholarly work in Civil

Lessons for Academic Leaders: A Harvard Program Draws From UMBC
UMBC became a case study at Harvard this year, an object lesson in
institutional advancement strategies for the Presidential Seminar at
the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education (HIHE). College and university
presidents from around the nation attended the presidential seminar "Leading
Institutional Advancement" in Cambridge last January. President Freeman Hrabowski
and Sheldon Caplis, vice president for institutional advancement, served
on the seminar's faculty.

UMBC Moves Into Top
Carnegie Foundation Rankings
UMBC has vaulted into the top tier of research universities, according to
the Carnegie Foundation's latest classification of American universities.
The new ranking, which moves UMBC into the rarefied company of such research
powerhouses as Harvard, Stanford, and MIT, recognizes UMBC's research mission
and the growth of its doctoral programs. (more...)
Making a Place For Women on the Web
Joan Korenman, director of UMBC's Center for Women & Information Technology
(CWIT), has been honored as one of the Top 25 Women on the Web. The award,
given by San Francisco Women on the Web, recognizes the achievements of women
who have made a significant contribution to the advancement
of technology and women in technology-related fields-recognition Korenman richly deserves.

For the third consecutive year since joining the Northeast
Conference (NEC), UMBC Athletics took home the Commissioner's
Cup, awarded annually to the school that performs

home the "top speaker" honors from this year's American Parliamentary

"Death" Sparks a Writer's Life
For UMBC mathematics professor Manil Suri, it
was a publishing debut that brought him attention in a host

Security Agency (NSA) designated UMBC a Center
of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education, one of only 23
