Working With Business

Smiling dignitaries wielding shovels. That was the scene at the
groundbreaking ceremony for UMBC's new research and technology park,
bwtech@UMBC, last fall. Maryland Governor Parris N. Glendening and
Baltimore County Executive C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger joined President
Freeman Hrabowski and representatives from campus and industry in digging
the first foundation holes for the tech park's first building.

T.Rowe Price Scholars at UMBC
The Baltimore-based financial management company T. Rowe Price & Associates
is building a multifaceted partnership with UMBC, one that ultimately will
serve to help build Maryland's technology-related workforce. The company has
hired a number of UMBC alumni and became one of the corporate sponsors of UMBC's
new Visionaries in Information Technology series.

Computer Certification Center Opens
To help meet the Baltimore-Washington region's exploding need for
qualified IT employees, UMBC embarked on a bold new venture this year
with the opening of the Computer Certification Training Center (CCTC),
a for-profit initiative that taps private investment and corporate partners
to bring UMBC's proven ability in computer training to the

Harnessing NASA Technology to Improve Health Care
In what has been hailed as an "unprecedented" agreement, NASA and StelSys, a UMBC
Tech Center start-up company, are defying gravity in hopes of developing life-saving
treatments. NASA agreed to license the patents
for a microgravity bioreactor, a space-agency invention that simulates the zero-gravity
environment of space, for commercial development by

Digimo CEO
Like many UMBC students, Andy Lufburrow has a job
that earns him money and keeps him busy between
classes. But Lufburrow's work
is not your usual off-campus employment. He's the founder and CEO
of his own company, Digimo, a web-development firm with a client
base of major corporations and headquarters
in the UMBC Technology Center. At least it's an easy
