Charting Our Success
Freshman SAT Scores Rise

The average SAT score for UMBC freshmen has increased dramatically
in recent years and is consistently higher than Maryland and national
averages. The projected average SAT score for the incoming freshman
class is 1202. The average GPA is 3.51.
UMBC's student body is also among the most diverse in the nation. Minority
enrollment is 34 percent overall, including
15 percent African-American, 16 percent Asian, and 3 percent Hispanic and
Native American students.
Research Grants and Contracts Grow

UMBC's dramatic growth in grants and contracts for research and training,
from $37 million in FY1996 to $80.4 million in FY2001, means more
opportunities for students to participate in research and more opportunities
for faculty to apply their expertise to challenges in the region and beyond.
Increased research expenditures also build the regional economy.
Faculty Among the Best

One measure of the quality of our faculty is their impressive
per-capita ranking for such major awards as Fulbright and Guggenheim
fellowships, National Endowment for the Humanities awards, and National
Science Foundation career development awards. UMBC's faculty compares
favorably with those from more well-known, well-established public
institutions.
An Increasing Focus on Technology Development

Our faculty work actively with business, industry, and
government to apply knowledge discovered through
research to needs in the larger world. Their work has
led to a growing number of invention disclosures for
such patentable items as fiber-optic switching devices,
anti-cancer drugs, and bio-sensors, as well as for
copyrighted software and courseware.
Campaign Success Continues

Thanks to the many donors to The Campaign for UMBC,
we have raised more than $57 million, achieving our $50-
million campaign goal with a year to go. In the fiscal year
just ended (July 1, 2000June 30, 2001), we raised more
than $10.2 million.
We also have surpassed our $10-million endowment goal.
UMBC's endowment has grown significantly in recent years,
from less than $3 million at the start of the campaign to a
current market value of approximately $16 million.
