Smiling dignitaries wielding shovels. That was the scene at
the groundbreaking ceremony for UMBC's new research and
technology park, bwtech@UMBC, last fall. Maryland Governor
Parris N. Glendening and Baltimore County Executive C.A. Dutch
Ruppersberger joined President Freeman Hrabowski and representatives
from campus and industry in digging
the first foundation holes for the tech park's first building.
"This groundbreaking is the culmination of many years
of persistence and patience," said UMBC Research and Technology
Park Executive Director Ellen Wiggins.
It's appropriate that bwtech@UMBC's first building will house
the Latitude360 Applied Technology Laboratory, whose president
is David Yager, UMBC visual arts professor and former director
of the UMBC Imaging Research Center. Latitude360 is a division
of RWD Technologies, headed by Robert W. Deutsch, a member of
the UMBC President's Board of Visitors.
"From the start, we've had a mission to bring together the
best minds from the world of academia and research to
address the needs of real-world companies," said Yager,
who expects to tap the talents of UMBC student interns
as well as faculty in creating visual-based information
technologies.
Companies such as Latitude360 and RWD Technologies "understand
the strategic value of locating at a business-friendly research
university," Wiggins adds. To learn more about bwtech@UMBC,
