Computer Certification Center Opens

To help meet the Baltimore-Washington region's exploding need for qualified IT employees, UMBC embarked on a bold new venture this year with the opening of the Computer Certification Training Center (CCTC), a for-profit initiative that taps private investment and corporate partners to bring UMBC's proven ability in computer training to the marketplace.

A state-of-the-art, 18,500-square-foot training facility offers nearly 60 day, evening, and weekend classes in a wide array of industry-approved courses. Since the CCTC opened its doors in February, more than 600 people have enrolled in its classes--many sponsored by their employers. CCTC also has provided customized training for employees of Comcast, the Health Care Financing Administration, and the Maryland General Assembly. In addition, through a partnership with Magellan University, the nation's first online university, CCTC offers web-based learning options to all of its classes. "CCTC can now serve both the more traditional training students, through instructor-led programs at our headquarters, and the consumer who is motivated more by self-paced learning at their convenience, available 24/7 online," said Doug Kendzierski, CCTC president and associate vice-provost in UMBC's Division of Professional Education & Training. For more information about CCTC programs, visit www.umbc.edu/cctc/.
